“OM”-icron in the New Year!

As if navigating through the holiday season was not challenging enough, the addition of the Omicron variant has resulted in a whole new source of anxiety (and frustration) for most of us.

(Learning the Greek alphabet was never on my “to-do” list, yet, here we are!)

The new year is often a time when people make “resolutions” or set goals for themselves.  There’s nothing wrong with that approach, but it often results in people feeling discouraged if they do not meet their own expectations.

How people navigate obstacles is often based in their sense of control over variables.  Here’s a link to an article that discusses the differences between having an internal locus of control and an external locus of control. (Spoiler alert… people with an external locus of control often experience more frustration and dissatisfaction in life.)

After navigating through the past 21 months (!), it is very clear to me that we really have limited control over the external variables in our lives.  If we are looking for our environment to be calm so that we can feel a sense of calm, we are setting ourselves up for a losing battle.

Personally, this year, I’m focusing on inward goals, wanting to prioritize how I am feeling, despite the environmental stress. I even picked a word for this year…. ease.  I am realizing that the things that are meant for me will make their way to me.  I need to do my “part,” but if it feels like it’s “forced,” it’s probably not the right thing/situation/timing.

Finding your inner stride, in the midst of a rising pandemic, is not as easy as flipping a “switch.” (Yup, it’s like the fancy dimmer switch in the dining room!)

I wonder if just maybe, the “OM” of Omicron can serve as a reminder to turn inward. As we navigate through continued uncertainty, these small internal adjustments may help bring some ease for all of us.
